Now TV technology is getting more sophisticated. After previously there was Quantum Dot LED also known as QLED TV and Organic LED otherwise known as OLED TV, now there is a new display technology called Quantum Dot OLED or QD-OLED.
The Quantum Dot OLED or QD-OLED made its official debut at CES 2022 and could be a game changer for TVs, computer monitors, and even in-car displays.
But what exactly is QD-OLED TV display technology, why is it potentially such a huge deal for picture quality, and which companies use it to make TV models with this technology? Check out the explanation below.

What is OLED QD?
Simply put, QD-OLED is a hybrid display technology that aims to improve the already impressive quality of OLED TVs and improve brightness and color through the use of quantum dots.
The result, according to experts, should be a TV that exhibits more stunning contrast levels and more perfect blacks than OLED while delivering the brightness levels we normally only see on QLED TVs.
In short, QD OLED gives us more advanced features than the previous two TV screen technologies, namely QLED TV and OLED TV.

How QD-OLED TV Works
A TV screen creates three different colors of light: red, green, and blue where these colors are combined to create an image on the screen.

Samsung Displaythe QD-OLED display has three main components: a TFT layer that includes an electronic circuit to pass current through the OLED material, a layer of blue OLED material that produces blue light, and a quantum dot layer.

TVs with Quantum Dots such as the Samsung QLED emit blue light into the Quantum Dot filter to produce red and green light. When this blue light source is combined with red and green light, it creates white light consisting of saturated red, green and blue to display the image on the screen.
The OLED screens manufactured by LG Display use blue and yellow OLED materials to produce white light which passes through a color filter to create red, green, and blue pixels to create the image you see on the screen.
A QD-OLED or QD display, as Samsung now calls it, uses a blue self-luminescent coating to shine blue light onto a quantum dot filter. The filter will take some of the blue light and turn it into red and green, and this combination of red, green, and blue light creates the image.
Another reason why it uses blue light for this process is because it has the strongest ‘light energy’ so it can achieve “relatively bright illumination”. Recent figures show that the QD Display can reach a peak brightness of 1500 nits.
Because QD screens require fewer layers, they can be less expensive to manufacture than OLEDs, and the screens will also be thin and light, compared to OLED LCD TVs which require backlighting.
Which Television Uses a QD-OLED Display?
As of late 2022, no TV manufacturer has released a television with a QD-OLED panel. But Samsung is expected to announce its first QD-OLED TV at CES 2022.
The company will likely release 55-inch and 65-inch models initially, with more sizes being added later.
Apart from Samsung, Sony and TCL are also reportedly working on a QD-OLED TV but there is no word on when they will launch.
