What is an Access Point – For those who are just learning about networking, of course you will be looking for understanding of access point completely. What is the function of the access point? The function of the access point itself is like a Hub or Switch on a local network. This access point acts to connect the local network with your wireless network.
In this access point, the internet connection from where you are transmitted or sent via radio waves. The size of the signal strength also affects the coverage area to be reached, the higher the signal strength the wider the coverage. There are two wireless devices, one is a type of wireless Access Point (AP) and the other is a Wireless Cable/DSL Router.
Understanding Access Points and Their Functions
The interface for setting the AP settings is done by entering the IP address of the AP device through the browser, several configurations are carried out, including by:
- Set up so that the AP can function as a DHCP server
- Try Wired Equivalent Privacy(WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access(WPA) features
- Set access based on MAC Address of the accessing device
- etc
Firmware Upgrade
Usually devices that have firmware such as AP will provide firmware upgrades to make repairs, even with firmware upgrades there will be additional or new functions. Just look for the latest firmware for the AP on the vendor’s website.
It turns out that there have been several releases of the old firmware in the AP, download the latest firmware version. The downloaded firmware is in the form of an executable file, running the file will decompress it and generate a README file and firmware update.
The upgrade process can be done easily, which is done directly through the browser, enter the firmware update file, then click sumbit, in less than a minute the upgrade process is complete and the new firmware is installed immediately. Reset to the default factory settings is done according to the Vendor recommendations in the README file.
Upgrading the firmware gives very satisfying results, namely the DHCP server can function properly and the availability of additional / new facilities, namely wireless devices now function into three types:
- Access Point (default function)
- Client Bridge Mode
- Repeater Mode
