Intentions and Procedures for Fasting Monday Thursday
1. Intention
The intention of fasting on Monday and Thursday is done at night before dawn or in the morning at dawn.
The intention of fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is as follows:
يَوْمَ اْلاِثْنَيْنِ للهِ الَى
“Nawaitu sauma yaumal itsnaii sunnatan lillahi tana’ala”
Meaning: “I intend to fast on Mondays, sunnah because of Allah ta’ala.”
2. Sahur
Reading the Sunnah Fasting Intentions Monday Thursday. Eating sahur is one of the sunnah of fasting. This is based on a hadith from Anas bin Malik radhiyallahu ‘anhu that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said:
ا السَّحُورِ
It means: “Sahur yourselves, because indeed in sahur there is a blessing.” (Muttafaqun ‘alaih)
But when he doesn’t have sahur because he wakes up late, his fast is still valid.
3. Refrain from some things that cancel
Fasting is refraining from eating, drinking, and lust from sunrise to sunset.
4. Iftar
Iftar is done at sunset. The iftar prayer is the same as the prayer used in the obligatory iftar, fasting in the month of Ramadan.
Prayer for breaking the fast from the history of HR Abu Dawud
Dzahabaz zhama’u wabtallatil ‘uruqu wa tsabatal ajru, God willing. Meaning: “The thirst has disappeared, and the veins are wet and the reward is still fixed, God willing.”
The advantages of Mondays and Thursdays are generally explained in the following hadith of Abu Hurairah:
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,
“Heaven’s doors are open on Mondays and Thursdays. Every servant who does not commit shirk to Allah a little will be forgiven (on that day) except for one who has a dispute (feud) between himself and his brother. It will be explained to them later, end their problems until they both make peace, end their problems until they both make peace.” (HR. Muslim no. 2565).
Supporting reasons regarding Monday-Thursday Fasting:
From ‘Aisyah radhiyallahu ‘anha, she explained,
“The Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- used to save the choice of fasting on Mondays and Thursdays.” (Narrated by An Nasai no. 2362 and Ibn Majah no. 1739. All Hafizh Abu Thohir explains that this hadith is hasan. Shaykh Al Albani explains if this hadith is authentic)
Osama bin Zaid said,
“I said to the Messenger -sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam-, “O Messenger of Allah, you are seen fasting until it is thought that there is no time for you not to fast. You look like you’re not fasting, so it’s thought you’ve never fasted. Except for 2 days that you talk to him and fast at that time.” The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam asked, “What are the two days?” Osama replied, “Monday and Thursday.” Then he said, “Those two days are the time for worshiping the Lord of the worlds (to Allah). I really like it when my deeds are faced while I am in a state of fasting.” (HR. An Nasai no. 2360 and Ahmad 5: 201. Al Hafizh Abu Thohir explains that this hadith is hasan).
From Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,
“There are various kinds of worship (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, so I like it when I do my deeds while I am fasting.”
(HR. Tirmidhi no. 747. At Tirmidhi explains that this hadith is hasan ghorib. Al Hafizh Abu Thohir explains that this hadith is hasan. Shaykh Al Albani explains that this hadith is authentic lighoirihi, i.e. authentically witnessed from another lane).
From Abu Qotadah Al Anshori radhiyallahu ‘anhu, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was asked about fasting on Mondays, then he replied,
“That day is the day I was born, the day I was sent or the revelation was sent down to me.” (HR. Muslim no. 1162)

Benefits of Fasting Monday Thursday
Rasulullah explained some of the benefits that can be taken when fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, one of them:
1. The Birthday of the Prophet, Determination of Prophethood, and the revelation of the Qur’an
Prophet Muhammad SAW as a role model for Muslims, was born on Monday.
He received the first revelation said by Jibril who brought the prophetic message, on Monday.
Based on the conversation of Abu Qatadah ra, Rasulullah SAW said:
“That is the day that I was born in it and the day that I was appointed as a Messenger or the day that I was sent down the Qur’an.” (HR Muslim)
2. Charity Listing Day
The recording of charity records every human day is apparently carried out on Mondays and Thursdays.
Therefore, if the recording of charity is carried out while we are fasting, hopefully the worst value will decrease.
Meanwhile, hopefully the value of the good deeds that have been done will increase.
In a story, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:
“The deeds are checked every Monday and Thursday, so I like to have my deeds checked while I am fasting.” (HR Turmudzi)
3. Expecting Allah’s Forgiveness
Some close friends asked what happened to Mondays and Thursdays, until the Prophet Muhammad gave special attention.
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah ra, Rasulullah SAW said:
“Actually, these deeds are worshiped every Monday and Thursday, because of that Allah is willing to forgive every Muslim or every believer, except for 2 people who are hostile, because that’s what He says: Strengthen them both.” (HR Ahmad)
There is one worst deed that is not tolerated by Allah SWT for the actor, namely being hostile to each other. Therefore, this deserves attention, to always get along well with colleagues, relatives, partners, and people around you.
4. Helps Lose Weight
Fasting is a safe way to lose weight because many studies have shown that when fasting, it allows the body to burn fat cells more efficiently than just a regular diet.
5. Increases Insulin Sensitivity
Fasting has been shown to have a positive impact on insulin sensitivity, enabling it to tolerate carbohydrates (sugars) better than non-fasting. A study shows that after a period of fasting, insulin becomes more efficient at instructing cells to take glucose from the blood.
6. Speed up Metabolism
Fasting gives rest to the digestive mechanism in the body, and this can provide metabolic energy to burn calories more effectively. If digestion is poor, it can affect a person’s ability to metabolize food and burn fat.
7. Can Extend Life
Believe it or not, the less people eat, the longer people will live. Research has shown how the life span of people in certain cultures is increased by their diet. However, it is not necessary to live between foreign communes to benefit from fasting. One of the special effects of aging is a slower metabolism.
8. Increases Hunger
Fasting helps regulate hormones in the human body so that you experience true hunger. We know that obese people don’t receive the right signals to let them know they are full due to overeating.
9. Improve Diet
Fasting is a useful practice for those who suffer from overeating problems, and for those who find it difficult to come up with a proper eating plan due to other tasks and focuses.
10. Improve Brain Function
Fasting has been shown to improve brain function because it increases the production of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
BDNF activates brain stem cells to be replaced into new neurons, and stimulates many other chemicals that promote nerve health. This protein protects some brain cells from the transitions associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
11. Boost Immune System
Fasting improves the immune system of the body because it reduces the damage caused by free radicals, regulates the state of infection in the body and makes some cancer cells starve.
12. Contribute to Self-Enlightenment
Fasting has helped some people feel more connected to life through the practice of reading, meditation, yoga, and martial arts, among others.
13. Helps Cleanse Skin and Prevent Acne
Fasting can help cleanse the skin so that while the body is freed from digestion, fasting can focus its regenerative energy on other mechanisms.
