Last month, Discord was building a new Clubhouse-like feature called “Stage Channels” which allows users to create and join live audio rooms. Discord has now officially announced the feature, and it’s active on Windows 10, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and web apps.
In this article, we will show you how to create and use Discord Stage Channels. Before we begin, it’s worth mentioning that “Stage Channels” are only available on community servers. Therefore, we will also show you how to change your current server to a community server.
What is Discord Community Server?
As the name suggests, Community Servers are servers that are meant to serve the community. In contrast to standard servers, it has powerful moderation tools and insights. However, there are some requirements to turn your server into a community server. You must have a verified email to participate on the server.
In addition, the server must enable explicit media content filters for the channel, and a separate channel for rules and community updates is a must.

How to Turn an Ordinary Server into a Community Server
- To turn your Discord server into a community server, click on your server name in the top left corner and click “Server settings“.
- From the Server settings page, go to the “Enable Community” under the Community tab present on the left sidebar. Once you are here, click on “Get Started“.
- Open the community server page setup and click “Finish Setup” after you are done. Placeholder channels for rules and announcements are created automatically in this process.
How to Create a Discord Stage Channel
- Now that you have a community server on Discord, you can now create a Stage Channel. To do so, click the icon “+” in the voice channel section.
- select Stage Channel as channel type and add channel name in the text box “Channel Name“. Click “Next” to proceed to the next step.
- You can then choose to add Stage moderator. The stage moderator can add and remove other speakers in the session. They also have controls for opening Stage Channels. It’s worth mentioning that a Stage moderator doesn’t have to be a server moderator.
- After you create a Stage Channel, Discord will tell you to set a discussion topic. Enter the name of the relevant topic and click “Open the Stage” to start.

How to Use Discord Stage Channels
- After creating a Discord Stage Channel, here’s how to use it. When there is an active Stage Channel, server members will see the option to quickly join the audio room from the left sidebar. Members can also clicking Stage Channel under the voice channel section to be part of the discussion.
- Participants join as listeners by default. As you can see in the screenshot below, Discord neatly groups the speakers and audience into separate sections.
- If you are a listener, you can “Request to Speak” by clicking the raise hand button at the bottom of the Stage Channel view on Discord.
- The stage moderator will then receive a talk request notification and can choose to invite you to the stage.
- If you don’t want to be a speaker anymore, you can click the “Move to Audience” to be a listener again.
- If you are a stage moderator and want to remove a member from the Stage Channel, you can right click their name and select “Disconnect from Stage“.
- You can exit the Stage Channel on Discord at any time using the “Exit Quietly“.
