One of the reasons why people don’t like Windows 10 is its update feature. Windows will automatically download every new update and will automatically install it. As users, we have no choice.
I also felt frustrated with this, before I finally found a way to turn off windows 10 updates. Although I have to admit, that windows updates are still important because they usually contain security and performance improvements.
But, as users, we want to have more flexibility when to update windows.
1. How to Turn Off Windows 10 Update With Windows Update Service
The first way we can use is to turn off / disable Windows Update Service. How to do it:
- open run commandyou can press Win + R
- When services.mscthen press enter
- select Windows Updateright-click twice.
- In section startup typechange to Disabled. After that click apply then click OK.

- Restart your laptop or computer.
If later you want to reactivate the windows update feature, just follow the steps above. In the startup type, change it to MANUAL or AUTOMATIC.
2. Disable Windows 10 Update Through Group Policy Editor
This method can be done for Windows 10 Education, Professional, and Enterprise users.
- open run command (Win+R)
- Type gpedit.mscthen enter
- select Computer Configuration > then Administrative templates
- select Windows Components > then open Windows Update

- Double click on Configure Automatic Updates

- Choose an option Disabled. See the following image.

- Finally, click apply then OK.
- Restart your computer or laptop
- If successful, then Windows will no longer automatically download every update.
If Windows on your PC is Windows 10 Home, then this method will not work.
Even if automatic updates have been turned off, you can still download the latest Windows 10 updates.
How to go to settings> windows update> click check for updates.
3. Turning Off Windows 10 Update With Win Update Stop Application
We can also turn off Windows 10 updates by using the help of third-party applications. One of them is the Win Update Stop application.
- Download and Install the Win Update Stop application
- Open the app
- Just select Disabled

- Finished.
To re-enable the Windows 10 automatic update feature, open the Win Update Stop application, select Enabled.
4. Turning Off Windows 10 Update By Restricting Internet Connection
Windows 10 update files are usually large, hundreds of MB even reaching Giga Bytes. No wonder, sometimes our quota runs out without realizing it.
Because Windows 10 downloads updates in the background.
To prevent this, we can limit the internet connection. This method is especially effective for those of you who have an internet connection on a laptop using Mifi or tethering from cellular data.
- Go to settings/settings
- select Network & Internet > then Wifi
- Click on the name of the Wifi you are using

- Scroll down, activate Set as metered connection
- Then click Set a data limit to help control data usage on this network

- Click data usage > then Enter limit
- Enter the data usage limit you want. For example, here I have a maximum of 2 GB per month.

- Then click Save.
This way, Windows won’t download updates automatically knowing that your internet connection is limited.
Conclusion
Those are some ways to turn off Windows 10 updates that you can do. However, I should also say that updating Windows is something that is also important.
Updating Windows regularly will make your Windows get the latest features, especially security features.
So, even if you’ve turned off Windows 10 automatic updates, I recommend taking the time to manually update.
