The USB port is a hole that must be in all computer or laptop devices. Its function is to connect external devices to a computer or laptop. External devices include a mouse, flash drive, hard disk, memory card, data cable, and much more.

However, who knows if it turns out that the problem is not in the external device, but in the USB port that is not working properly. In this article, we will provide some information about USB ports that don’t work properly.
1. Restart / Restart the laptop or computer
The first way you can do when the USB port won’t work is by restarting your computer or laptop. This is an old method that might work if you try.
By restarting the device, all systems on software and hardware will work better again because of the fresh condition of the laptop or computer. If this first method doesn’t work, try the next program.

2. Change USB settings in BIOS
If the first method doesn’t work, you can try another second method, namely by changing the USB port settings in the BIOS. The steps are as below.
- Press the Delete/F2 key on the keyboard. Press continuously before the boot process starts.
- If you have entered the BIOS menu, enter the Power Management menu.
- In the USB Port section, look for configuration in the form of the ‘Enable’ menu, click the menu.
3. Check using Antivirus
A USB port that doesn’t work properly can also be caused because your laptop or computer is infected with a virus. The virus may attack the USB port so that it cannot connect external devices to a computer or laptop.
Therefore, it never hurts to try to see and overcome it with the help of an antivirus.

4. Check on Device Manager
If the third method doesn’t work anymore, it’s possible that the one affected by the virus is not a laptop or computer, but the USB driver. To be sure, try the following steps.
- Go to the Device Manager section on your computer.
- Look for Universal Serial Bus Controller, right click it.
- Select Scan for Hardware Changes.
- Restart your computer.
5. Uninstall USB Controllers in Device Manager
You can use this fifth method if the fourth method doesn’t work. Perform the method of uninstalling USB controllers in the Device Manager in the following way.
- Go to the Device Manager section on your computer.
- Look for Universal Serial Bus Controller, click to select it.
- On the menu will appear USB Controller, right click.
- Select uninstall USB Controller
- Restart your computer. The computer will automatically re-install and try to detect the hardware again.

6. Unplug the Power Supply
To try to make sure it’s not the USB port power that’s the main problem, you can check it this way.
- Unplug the power supply connected to your laptop.
- Do a restart and reconnect the USB to the laptop.
- Plug the power supply back into the laptop and see if the USB port is working or not.
7. Unplug everything connected to the USB port and remove the battery
The next step you have to do if the previous methods have not worked either is to remove the battery and everything that is connected directly to the USB port. Here are the steps.
- Unplug all devices that are directly connected with the USB port.
- Turn off your laptop and let it sit for three to five minutes.
- Unplug your laptop battery too.
- After waiting a few minutes, reinstall the battery. Turn on your laptop when you’re done.
- Try to reconnect all the devices that you unplugged earlier, and check whether they are back to work or not.
If all the methods above haven’t been able to make your laptop’s USB port work again, it’s possible that the USB port is damaged and can’t be used again.
