When we insert the flash on a PC or laptop, sometimes there are problems that occur. One of these problems is that the flash drive is unallocated. This means that the capacity of the flash “disappears” some of it should exist.
You can see that the Flashdisk is unallocated when you enter the Computer Management section.
Of course this is very detrimental because we can not save the data that should be done. To be able to overcome this, the following is in full.

Causes of Unallocated Flashdisk
Previously we had to know about the cause of the flash being unallocated. Usually this happens because of a technical error or something on the flash.
Some of the causes are as follows:
- There is a corrupt file on the flash so that the partition is disturbed
- There are too many files on the flash disk, resulting in damage to the partition
- Flash drives are often unplugged without going through the Eject or Safely process.
- There is a file that is infected with a computer virus.
- Flashdisk suffered physical damage such as having been dropped and the like.

How to repair an Unallocated flash drive
After we know the cause, now we discuss how to fix it below.
1. Using Command Prompt
The first way is through the Command Prompt program or often also called CMD. You can see the steps themselves below.
- Please enter first into the CMD program. For a quick way, please press CTRL + R simultaneously on the keyboard.
- After the Run program appears, please type CMD and press enter.
- When CMD appears, you just type “diskpart” without using quotes.
- Later, you will see a CMD dialog where previously a folder has now changed to DISKPART.
- Then type “list disk” to be able to see the position of the flash. Make sure the incoming flash is connected to the PC or laptop you are using.
- When finished, all you have to do is click enter and you will see a list of disks connected to your PC or laptop. Make sure you already know the location of the flash drive
- Then, type “select disk 1” (adjust to the detected flash position.
- When the phrase “Disk 1 is now the selected disk” appears, then you just type “Clean”. Again make sure not to choose the wrong disk. Because this command is to clean the disk.
- After you do a clean, next is to type “create partition primary”. The purpose of this command is to create a new partition on the flash.
- If it works, then just type “Exit” so you will exit diskpart.
If the method was successful, then the flash will return to normal. However, there is a risk that all previous data will be lost.

2. Using the Partition Recovery application
The next way is to use a special application called Partition Recovery. Although the main purpose of this application is to restore partitions on disks, it can also be used to repair unallocated flash drives.
You can see how you do it yourself below:
- Please download the Partition Recovery application first on various sites.
- After you download and install it, immediately open the application.
- Choose a recovery method according to your wishes (Usually the free version only has limited features).
- Make sure the flash is connected to your PC or laptop
- After that, select the unallocated flash.
- Then select recovery mode and click OK.
- After that, choose the type of recovery whether you want the full version or the fast version. Of course, the most visible difference is in terms of speed and the data that will experience recovery.
- If you have already determined it, please click next.
- Next, the scanning process will be carried out, please wait for the process to complete.
- If successful, then the flash can return to normal.
Not much different from the previous point, it’s just that at this point we don’t have to worry about using the Command Prompt which we are not used to.
3. Using Disk Manager
The next way is to use Disk Manager. Besides being used to view and partition the hard disk to the flash disk, Disk Manager can also be used to repair unallocated flash drives.
For your own way, you can see below:
- Connect the flash on your PC or laptop
- After that, please press the Windows key + R on the keyboard.
- Later the Run program will appear and you just enter the command “diskmgmt.msc” without using quotes.
- Then you click OK and wait until the process is complete.
- After the Disk manager page has appeared, you just need to find the flash that was inserted earlier and look at the status column.
- If the status is Unallocated, then choose the format.
- After that, a box will appear whose contents are to format. Please select FAT32 in the file system section.
- Then, please tick “Perform a Quick format” and select OK.
If successful, then the memory on the flash will return as before. However, all previous data will be deleted entirely.
