How to fix a flash that can’t be formatted

1. Utilize Computer Management

If you have a laptop or PC, then this method is very doable. You can see some of the steps below:

  • Please connect the flash drive to the USB port.
  • On the PC or laptop you are using, please click Start->Run. You can also use the keyboard by pressing Windows key + R.
  • After the Run program opens, please just type “compmgmt.msc” without using quotes. Next, you just press the Enter key.
  • If successful, the Computer Management window appears. In that window, you can select the “Storage” menu which is located at the bottom right.
  • Next, the flash that was previously inserted will be scanned by the Windows system.
  • When the flash drive letter is detected (usually using the name “I:”), please right-click and select Create Partition.
  • Next, you can right-click and select Format.
  • For those of you who use Windows 7 to 10, then you can directly select Format when right-clicking the flash drive letter.
  • Please wait a few moments for the process to complete.
  • When the process is complete, the flash drive has been successfully formatted in its entirety.

2. Using the Write Zeros method

The next way is to use Write Zeros or the Low Level Format method. This method is claimed to be able to format the flash up to 100% clean. This means that the data in the flash can be completely removed easily.

  • First of all, you have to download an application called HDDGURU Low Level Format Tool. You can get it for free through Google.

4. Using Registry Editor

The next way is to use the Registry Editor on a laptop or computer. This method only applies when the flash cannot be formatted because it is Write Protected. Usually the Write Protected problem is caused by the Flashdisk being pulled out too often without going through the Safety Remove Flashdisk. For the steps themselves can be seen below.

  • Connect the flash drive to your laptop or computer first.
  • Then click Start-Run. You can also use the Windows +R combination on the keyboard.
  • After the Run program opens, you just type regedit and press enter on the keyboard.
  • Later you will be directed to the Registry Editor.
  • Please press the Ctrl + F keys on the keyboard. Then type Write Protected and press Enter.
  • Next is to wait until the search process is complete.
  • When the search results appear. Delete the register by selecting Delete.
  • If a confirmation dialog appears, then all you have to do is click OK.
  • Next is to close the Registry Editor window and remove the Flashdisk.
  • Restart the laptop or PC that was used earlier.
  • After the laptop or PC restarts, please reconnect the flash drive and check whether the Write Protected code is still there or deleted.
