What is the Velocity Edit Technique in Capcut?
Velocity CapCut technique is a technique how to change the speed of the video in a certain area which allows you to slow down or speed up the video at the same time. With Velocity editing, you don’t need to get hung up on the default video speed and can easily take creative freedom to present your video the way you want.
CapCut doesn’t give you a button “Edit Velocity” special, but you can easily get the desired result by changing in the speed section.
In every app video editor, the default playback speed is set to 1.0, which is the real-time speed. Now, if you choose to speed up the video, for example: for a certain time intervalyou have no choice but to speed up the whole video.
This can make videos one-dimensional and even boring. The same thing happens with slow-mo videos, which often take a lot of time to get to the good parts, which detracts from the viewer’s concentration.

Speed editing in CapCut, on the other hand, frees you up by adding five beats or checkpoints to your video. This checkpoint lets you speed up or slow down certain areas of that video while keeping the rest untouched. So, in theory, you can speed up one Tap, keep the two Taps unchanged, and then end it by slowing down the last beat.

How to Change Video Speed in CapCut
- Select a video to edit from your Gallery and create New project. You can also open the tab ‘Stock videos‘ and choose a video from there.
- Tap ‘Add‘ at the bottom of your screen to load the video in the editor.
- Next tap the tab ‘Edit‘ in the lower left corner of the screen to access editing options.
- Next, tap on the option ‘Speed‘.
- Here, you will find two options, ‘Normal‘ and ‘Curve.’ The first option is for standard speed manipulation — speed up or slow down. The second, ‘Curve,’ is for editing Velocity. Tap ‘Curve‘ and wait for the options to load.
- Then, tap ‘Custom‘ and tap again to access Beats.
- Here are five beats, meaning your video is divided into five symmetrical parts.
- Press and hold any point and drag up or down to speed up or slow down the area.
- You can speed up videos up to 10.0x and slow them down by 0.1x. Keep in mind that tweaking one beat won’t mess up another. Once you are done customizing, tap on the button tick in the lower right corner of the screen to save changes.
- Finally, tap the button upload in the upper right corner of the screen to save the file. You can even directly share it on TikTok, WhatsApp, Facebook and more.
Does CapCut Have Velocity Edit Presets?
Yes, CapCut comes with six presets —’Montage,’ ‘Hero,’ ‘Bullet,’ ‘Jump Cut,’ ‘Flash In,’ Flash Out‘ — all of which you can access after tapping on ‘Curve.’
Tapping on it will give you a quick preview. If you like what you see, tap the check button, in the lower right corner, to save the settings.
How to Add Beats During Velocity Editing
As we discussed, Velocity gives you five beats to play. However, if you want, you can add a few more for greater flexibility. Tap on the yellow timestream to select the part you want to add beat and tap on the ‘ buttonAdd beat‘ at the top right.
Then you can manipulate the Beat as per your wish. Tap the check button at the bottom right to save the edit.
