  2. On the next screen, select the video that you want to edit and add a blur effect.
  3. Once you have selected the video which you want to edit, tap on the “Add” button at the bottom right corner.
  4. The selected video will now be added to the New CapCut project. On this screen, tap the “Effects” tab from the bottom toolbar.
  5. The overflow menu will now appear at the bottom of the screen. By default, you will be shown all the available effects in the “Trending” tab at the top. Scroll through these tabs and find the ‘Basic’ category.
  6. Inside the ‘Basic’ tab, scroll down, select the ‘Blur’ effect, and if you are satisfied with the blur type, tap the check mark.
  7. You will now be taken back to the project timeline inside CapCut where you should be able to see the Blur effect applied to your video.
  8. By default, the Blur effect will only be applied to a portion of your video. To extend the effect to the entire length of the video, tap the “Blur” bar marked in purple, drag the pointer over it, and drop it at the end of your video. This will ensure that your entire video is covered in blur.

How to blur video in CapCut (Partial)

If you only want to partially blur the video, like the face, then the following set of steps will help you to get it done.

  1. First of all add the video which you want to blur. You can do this by creating a “New project” inside the CapCut application.
  2. Now, select the video that you want to edit and tap on the ‘Add’ button at the bottom right corner.
  3. When a video is added to your CapCut project, tap the ‘Overlay’ tab at the bottom.
  4. On the next screen, tap on the ‘Add Overlay’ option.
  5. Select the same video that you added first as an Overlay.
  6. The overlay video will now appear above your main video.
  7. Using your finger, pinch and drag the overlay video and position it directly over your main video. This is necessary because, for some reason, CapCut overlays the second video within the boundary of the main video. You need to make sure the borders of the first and second video are perfectly aligned.
  8. Once you have aligned the second video on top of the first, tap on the left-facing arrow icon in the bottom-left corner.
  9. This will take you to the main toolbar at the bottom. The next step is to apply the blur effect to the whole video like you did in the previous section. For this, tap on the ‘Effects’ option at the bottom.
  10. Next, go to the ‘Basic’ category when the Effects menu appears, and select the ‘Blur’ effect. When you’re done selecting effects, tap the checkmark icon.
  11. You should be able to see the Blur effect applied to your video.
  12. For some reason, CapCut doesn’t apply effects to the entire length of the video. But you can expand it to cover the entire video by dragging the end pointer and dropping it at the end of your video.
  13. Once you have done that, select the “Blur” bar marked in purple then tap on the ‘Object’ tab from the bottom.
  14. You have to choose where you want to place the Blur effect. From the menu that appears, select the ‘Overlay’ tile and then tap the check mark.
  15. Now, return to the main project timeline by tapping the left-facing arrow icon in the lower left corner. On the project time screen, go to the ‘Overlay’ tab once again.
  16. Inside the Overlay screen, tap on the second video that you added as the previous overlay. Swipe through the bottom toolbar and select the ‘Mask’ tool.
  17. From here, you can select different shapes for your blur effect. If you are trying to blur faces on video, I suggest you select the ‘Circle’ option on the screen. However, you can choose any shape you want for the blur effect, depending on what you want to blur.
  18. Before tapping the check mark, position the Blur to the position of your choice and resize it using the arrows provided at the top and right. You can also adjust the blur intensity by dragging the downward-facing arrows up and down to the settings of your choice.
  19. Once you have adjusted the Blur mask, tap on the check mark at the bottom to apply it.

Now, you can leave that blur effect if the subject you are blurring doesn’t move. However since this is a video and a lot of things move around a lot, you might want to consider blurring the subject as it moves. To accomplish this, we will use Keyframes to reposition the Blur mask to a different position as the subject moves.

  1. For this, search through the video as it plays and check when the subject moves out of the Blur area. Look for the place when it happens and tap the Keyframe icon adjacent to the play button.
  2. When you do, CapCut will mark the place with a diamond icon. When this icon is red, it means that you have selected it. With the mainframe selected, tap on the ‘Mask’ option from the bottom toolbar.
  3. Next, reposition or reshape the Blur mask as you like.
  4. Now, tap on the check mark at the bottom.
  5. You can add as many keyframes as you like in the video, provided that is required. When you add some keyframes, you should be able to see some diamond icons in the search bar.
  6. As the video jumps from one keyframe to the next, the Blur mask changes position and shapes gradually so that the video quality is not affected.
