Internet Quantum Telperotation Tested By Scientists – Quantum teleportation, sending qubits of photons over fiber-optic cables has been demonstrated by several researchers for the first time.
The proceeds can be used to improve quantum internet services, which will rotate data storage and computing. Some researchers admit this discovery will usher in a new age of communication.
Some researchers send qubits over a fiber-optic network as far as 44 km with 90% accuracy. The network is built with off-the-shelf equipment that will match the existing internet infrastructure.
Qubits work by exchanging traditional bits – the ‘1’ and ‘0’ which are used to encode digital information – with quantum bits, or qubits.
As taken from The Independent, these can act as ‘1’ and ‘0’ at the same time as being in a superposition state, meaning each new qubit added to the computer increases exponentially rather than linearly.
Quantum teleportation, therefore, is the transfer of a quantum position from one position to another. This transfer is accomplished by means of quantum entanglement, in which two particles are linked in such a way that one information is shared by the other at exactly the same time.
This is because the particle is in a probable position, where its exact state, moment, and spin are not confirmed until the particle is measured. Photons behave this way, so either waves or particles depend on how they are measured.
“We want to drive this type of research and take important steps towards realizing real-life programs for quantum communications and networks and testing essential physics ideas,” said Panagiotis Spentzouris, head of the Quantum Science Program at Fermilab.
“Some people on social media are asking if they should register with a quantum internet supplier. We need more and more research and improvement work for this,” said Maria Spiropulu, Shang-Yi Ch’en professor of physics at Caltech.
Quantum computers are capable of computing nearly 100 trillion times faster than the world’s most powerful supercomputers. Teams from the University of Science and Technology of China, and Google, have successfully achieved this feat using two different systems.
“Recently, the US Department of Energy issued a blueprint for the national quantum internet in Chicago, and the demonstrations achieved by several researchers could lay the groundwork for the construction of the Chicago-area metropolitan quantum network,” Spentzouris said.
The research has been published in PRX Quantum by researchers from Fermilab, AT&T, Caltech, Harvard University, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the University of Calgary.
“We are absolutely delighted to have achieved this milestone in a protracted, high-performance and scalable quantum teleportation mechanism. The results are further enhanced by the increase in the mechanism which we predict will be completed in Q2 2022,” said Professor Spiropulu.
