About National Teacher’s Day
Quoted from Tirto.id that National Teacher’s Day which is celebrated every November 25 has a long history because it is closely related to the birthday of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) on November 25, 1945.
In 1912, as reported by the official page pgri.or.id, indigenous teachers in the Dutch era established a struggle organization called the Dutch East Indies Teachers Association (PGHB).
The members of PGHB are auxiliary teachers, village teachers, school principals and school inspectors. In general, they work in the Village School and Number Two People’s School. The main goal of this organization is to fight for the fate of its members, who, of course, have different social status and educational backgrounds. This struggle is not easy.
As time progressed, new teacher organizations were also born, such as the Association of Assisting Teachers (PGB), the Association of Village Teachers (PGD), the Association of Teachers Ambachtsschool (PGAS), United Normalschool (PNS), Hogere Kweekschool Bond (HKSB).

Hymn Guru Song Maker
The song Hymn Guru was composed by Sartono. The man who was born in Madiun, May 29, 1936, had worked as a music art teacher before being known as the composer of the Hymne Guru song.
Sartono resides at Jalan Halmahera No. 98, Oro-Oro Ombo Village, Kartoharjo District, Madiun City. He lives with his wife, Damijati and his adopted son, Ratno. They adopt children because they are unable to have children.
The song Hymn Guru composed by Sartono is familiar to school students. During his life, Sartono was still called by people to teach piano lessons or private organ and was often invited by residents to social events.
Sartono has retired from SMK Bernardus for decades. Sartono’s wife, Yanti, is a retired teacher from SDN Klagen 02 Madiun.
The Story of the Hymn Guru
In the 1980s, Sartono composed the song “Hymne Guru: Pahlawan Unsung Heroes” as an effort to appreciate teachers because they were considered to be very instrumental in education in Indonesia.
As quoted from the book Collection of Popular National, Traditional, & Children’s Compulsory Songs (2022) by Hani Widiatmoko, Dicky Maulana, Sartono is a former music art teacher at a private foundation school in Madiun City, East Java.
The man who was born in Madiun, May 29, 1936, is studying music by himself without having received any education about music. However, in 1978, he was the only music teacher in the Madiun area who could read musical notes. Due to the limitations of musical instruments at that time, he composed the song Hymn Guru by whistling while writing the notes on paper.
The Guru’s Hymn has become the National Mandatory Song for HGN
Quoted from the Ministry of Education and Culture website, the government set the song Hymne Guru to be the national anthem in 1980. On the momentum of National Education Day 1980, Sartono participated in a songwriting competition about education. Of the hundreds of participants, his song “Hymne Guru, Unsung Hero” won the competition.
Apart from the song ‘Hymne Guru’, Sartono also composed eight other educational themed songs. His attention to the world of education led to an award in 2000 from the then Minister of National Education (Mendiknas), Yahya Muhaimin. Then in 2005, Bambang Soedibyo was also given the award as Minister of National Education at the time.
