Understanding and Functions of Webmail

Webmail (Web-based Mail) is an email application client web based. If you have previously seen or used email services such as Yahoo and Gmail. They use webmail as email client for each user, for example Gmail which can be accessed at www.gmail.com.

In this tutorial we will focus on learning how to install and configure webmail using Squirrelmail.

Before installing and starting to configure Squirrelmail as webmail on a Debian server. Make sure you have installed and configured the web server and DNS server on your server computer.

Because Webmail is an email app client web-based, then webmail requires a web server to run.

Install Squirrelmail As Webmail on Debian 8

Squirrelmail is one of the most popular webmail applications. The features of Squirrelmail are quite complete and easy to configure.

Squirrelmail is now available online default on Debian, good on repository nor on iso files or DVD binary. In this tutorial I am using Debian 8, but this tutorial can also be used on Debian 9 or earlier versions of Debian such as Debian 7 and Debian 6.

If you do the installation via repositorymake sure you are connected to the internet, or if you are installing via DVD binary, insert DVD binary where the squirrelmail package is located. As of Debian 8.6, the Squirrelmail package is on DVD binary 3.

Then to install Squirrelmail, enter the following command:

# apt-get install squirrelmail

Press Enter if out output which asks if you are sure you want to do the installation. Then wait for the installation process to complete and make sure it works well.

If you install via DVD, because Squirrelmail also requires other packages, then during Squirrelmail installation, you will be asked to insert another binary DVD to install the packages that will be needed to run Squirrelmail.
