The Qur’an provides many scientific instructions which have been proven today to be very clear miracles, because the Qur’an fits perfectly into modern science.
One of the divine miracles of al-qur’anul karim is that Allah uses linear instructions to make the Qur’an truly dynamic and appropriate for all the times presented in it, because human knowledge also develops according to its times.
Recently the annual conference of adherents of flat earth or flat earth theory was held for the first time. The Flat Earth International Conference in North Carolina, United States in November 2022.
The conference claimed that the shape of the earth is flat or like a disk and is not round as scientists around the world have recognized. They also brought references from the verses of the holy book, including the verses of the Qur’anul Karim.
Sources at the conference quoted various verses in the Qur’an in which it is said that the earth is stretched or spread which means that the earth is flat.
To know the real meaning of a verse of the Qur’an, one must know the meaning of the basic word in the Qur’anic language, namely Arabic and also not be separated from the actual context. We cannot directly use our own language dictionary to find a definition of the language of the Koran.
We know that there is not a single verse in the Quran that explicitly says that the earth is flat. According to the interpretation of the majority of scholars regarding the shape of the earth in the verses of the Qur’an there are two terms, Khalaqa which means to create and Ja’alna which means to make.
Khalaqa means that Allah created the shape of the earth which is round and Ja’alna means that by Allah the earth has been made flat or spread out for humans who live on it.
Notice, all the words Ja’alna or make will be connected with the word overlaid, but there is no word Khalaqa or created which is followed by the word overlaid.
For example, the Qur’an Surah Al Baqarah verse 22
“It is He who has made the earth a bed for you and the sky a roof, and He sends down rain from the sky.”
The word Firasyan has the meaning of a bed, meaning that the earth is spread out as a resting place for humans, not in the overall sense that the earth is flat.
Pay attention to the sentence
“It is He who made the earth a stretch for you…”
This verse shows that the earth was made spread out for our human eyes.
How is the point of view of our eyes on the earth, spread out right? For the shape of the earth itself the Qur’an has explained in the letter Ar Rahman verse 33 which reads,
“O all jinn and humans if you are able to penetrate or cross the corners of the heavens and the earth then cross, you will not be able to penetrate it except with authority or strength”
Note that the Koran here uses the word akthori which is translated as corner. the word means diameter or diameter, this word is the plural of Quthr.
A 3-dimensional figure that has many diameters is an ellipsoid or one that tends to resemble it. An ellipsoid is a shape that is round like a ball with a flattened shape like an egg. Therefore, the famous Muslim scientist Al Biruni conducted an experiment in calculating the diameter of the earth instead of calculating the length or width of the earth.
In the letter Az Zumar verse 5 Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says:
“He created the heavens and the earth with a right purpose, he closed the night or the day and closed the day over the night and subjected the sun and the moon to each running according to its appointed time. Remember he is the most powerful, the most forgiving.”
Closing “yukawwiru” in the verse linguistically implies coating something on a round object which is usually used in terms of covering the turban on the head.
Indonesian Al-Quran expert Professor Ahsin Sakho Muhammad said the flat earth theory only sees the shape of the earth from the side of the eye, with the human eye, of course it is limited but when viewed as a whole the earth is round.
In Surah Az Zumar verse 5, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala uses the word yukawwiru which is taken from the word Takwir. The word Takwir means ball or rolling because of the round shape of the earth, the time between day and night alternates.
The word Khalaqa is used with the word yukawwiru, so once again, it is implied that Allah wants to tell people that the earth is round and that the earth is then spread out.
What’s interesting about the letter An Naziat verse 30 is the word hahaha which has been the subject of much debate. Dahaha here is interpreted as being spread out, it only appears once, namely in this verse only from the many verses of the Koran that say spread or spread.
Dahaha comes from the verb Daha which is derived from the verb Dahw which can mean to stretch, push, throw, move, even based on the lens arabic-english lexicon when discussing Daha and its derivatives although it has many meanings such as stretching, pushing, throwing and moving but the verbs are always associated with round objects such as eggs, pebbles, and round toys.
Like Idhiyya or Adhiyyah which is interpreted by the way birds make nests, namely by scavenging the sand with both feet and then laying the eggs by sliding the eggs.
The majority of the opinions of the majority of scholars state that the interpretation of the Qur’anic verses regarding the shape of the spherical earth is much stronger than that of the flat earth Wallahu A’lam Bishwab
