Written and directed by Jacob Chase, Come Play tells the story of an autistic boy who is always alone by Oliver (Azhy Robertson).
Looking for a playmate, one day he meets an invisible monster named Larry, and he often invites him to play. This latest horror film has just been screened on the CGV theater network. The story presented is actually moral, but is loaded with unique and unusual actors’ backgrounds.
Synopsis of Come Play
Oliver (Azhy Robertson) is an autistic boy who cannot speak. He always uses smart tools to make his parents understand what he wants to say. Smart tools can help him choose words that are difficult to pronounce in written or sign language. When feeling lonely, he himself will spend some time watching the animated series “SpongeBob SquarePants”.

Oliver’s parents, Sarah (Jillian Jacobs) and Marty (John Gallagher Jr.) have been separated for a long time, which makes Oliver even more depressed and lonely. One day, he finds an app on his smartphone that catches his eye. The app called “Misunderstood Monster” tells the story of a monster named Larry, reading page after page, knowing that he too wants a friend. After Oliver reads Larry’s story, strange things start to happen to him.
It seemed like the lights in his room were starting to go out one by one, until another monster’s face appeared as he played with his device. The innocent Oliver later told his mother about the matter, but the mother didn’t believe it until one day, when the creature came out of the child’s screen, the parents realized that their child was in danger and they had to take quick action!
Like many horror films released in 2022, this one is a bit illuminating (though not perfect), as many horror films were released this year, and the quality is below average.

Come Play is an adaptation of Chase’s 2022 short film “Larry”. After the success of the short version, Jacob Chase wanted to develop the story into big screen material. Come Play usually uses different story material from horror films.
This time the ghost figure was made into an AR program. Larry is also described as an ordinary person, with his fluent language and familiar voice. This film is Jacob Chase’s first horror film after struggling with romantic projects such as “Four-sided Liar”, “Amy” and “After School Special”.
Az Robertson, John Gallagher Jr., Gillian Jacobs, Rachel Wilson and Kate Fenton will star in “Come Play.” I understand the message this film is trying to convey. This is a good message about children’s lives. This era is increasingly dependent on technology, so they no longer interact with the people around them, but pay more attention to gadgets.
Although this film is not bad but conveys good news, the storyline of this film seems easy to forget. It starts with some tense scenes and ends with an unpleasant, but still sweet ending, so we forget about the tense scenes at the start.
