Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is skeptical of the story until four teenagers all mysteriously die exactly one week after watching the tape.
Allowing her investigative curiosity to get the better of her, Rachel tracks down the video and watches it. Now he has only seven days to unravel the mystery, and to escape his prophesied death.
2. Rosemary’s Baby
One of the greatest horror films of all time, Rosemary’s Baby is perfect for a spooky night. The film follows Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow), who moves into an apartment building in New York City with her husband, a struggling actor named Guy (John Cassavetes), even though the apartment building is allegedly haunted. Based on the novel of the same name, Gerald’s Game follows Jessie (Carla Gugino, Spy Kids) and Gerald (Bruce Greenwood, Star Trek), a married couple who search for a remote lake house in Alabama to mend their failed relationship. While engaging in some light bondage, in which Jessie is handcuffed to a bed, the couple argue about their marriage.
Gerald, after taking two V**gra, suffers a heart attack, falls dead on the floor of a secluded lake house and leaves Jessie handcuffed to her bed. The film follows the psychological effects that haunt Jessie when she is trapped in bed.
4. Creep 2
Both Creep and Creep 2 are available to stream on Netflix, but in general, 2022’s Creep 2 is considered the better of the two films. Both films are horror films directed by Patrick Brice and starring Mark Duplass, who also serves as a writer on both films. While the first Creep was about a man who wants a stranger’s help in making a film for his unborn child, Creep 2 raises the stakes, when Josef (Duplass) hides his identity and becomes a serial killer with the ability to film his victims.
Both films are worth watching, but be warned: you may like some very spooky content. A sequel to Creep 3 has also been announced.
5. Apostle
Apostle is one of Netflix’s newest horror films, a cult classic 1970s horror-thriller. Set in 1905, the film tells the story of Thomas as he arrives on a remote Welsh island to save his sister from a dangerous cult that is holding the woman hostage. When Thomas tries to infiltrate the cult, he finds himself haunted by his past, with the island claiming to reject the corruption of the society that Thomas happens to represent.
Directed by The Raid: Gareth Evans of Redemption, Apostle is a must-watch for fans of ’70s horror films. The film is beautifully shot, filled with haunting imagery, and features Dan Stevens in one of his best roles to date.
6. The Evil Dead
Director Sam Raimi’s skyrocketing classic supernatural horror film is back on Netflix. The Evil Dead hit theaters in 1981, the film was made on a budget of less than $100,000, after Raimi begged anyone he knew to help finance the film. When production finally began in Tennessee, the inexperienced crew got lost on the first day of shooting, and the set’s bad luck didn’t stop there.
Crew members were injured, cast members could only keep demon eye contact lenses on for up to fifteen minutes, and because the entire team was staying in the cabin where the shoot was taking place, it quickly led to fights and fights. The Evil Dead is set as a fantastic B-film, telling the story of five college students vacationing in an isolated cabin, where they are soon confronted with demonic treasures and evil spirits.
7. Insidious
Prior to The Conjuring and Aquaman, director James Wan teamed up with Patrick Wilson on Insidious, the first film in the franchise to have spawned a sequel and two prequels. The first movie is usually considered the best, and while it’s not quite as good as The Conjuring and its universe, it’s an excellent time when you’re feeling haunted.
Insidious tells the story of a couple Josh and Renai Lambert (Wilson and Rose Byrne respectively) whose son goes into a coma, becoming a vessel for ghosts in the astral dimension. Their son is played by a young Ty Simpkins, who MCU fans will recognize from Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Endgame, along with Jurassic World.
8. Hush
Hush is written by Flanagan and his wife Kate Siegel, and stars John Gallagher Jr (10 Cloverfield Lane), Michael Trucco, and Siegel himself. This film tells the story of Middle Young, a girl who became deaf as a teenager and now lives her life isolated from other people who work as writers.
When an assassin kills her friend outside her door, Maddie realizes she is her next target. The sadistic killer thought an isolated deaf girl would be easy to torture and kill, but it turns out that Maddie prefers to fight back.
9. Train to Busan
Train to Busan may be foreign to most Americans, but if you’re looking to dive into the world of South Korean films, this action-horror thriller is a great introduction. The film follows passengers on a high-speed train bound from Gwangmyeong Station to Busan in South Korea, with passengers including Seok-woo, a divorced manager taking his daughter to her mother’s house; a working class man and his pregnant wife; high school baseball team; and a homeless man with PTSD. As the train departs, a convulsive young woman jumps on the board sustaining a bite wound to her leg, and quickly becomes a zombie, transferring the virus to others on the train.
Passengers have to fight hard to get to Busan — but who will be lost along the way?
10. It Comes at Night
Set against the backdrop of a global pandemic that’s decimating the planet’s population, It Comes at Night is one of the studio’s most acclaimed indie horror films. The film tells the story of Paul (Joel Edgerton), along with his wife Sarah and teenage son Travis, who are exiled in their home deep in the woods. After catching a stranger into the house, Paul ties him to a tree, puts a bag over his head to make sure he doesn’t get the disease, and leaves him for the night.
When the stranger, Will, proves well, he explains that he had no idea the house was occupied, and was looking for water and shelter for his wife and son. When Sarah suggests Paul bring a stranger into their home, the two families will find themselves trapped under an uncomfortable alliance.
