How to Create Breakout Rooms on Google Meet

Breakout Rooms in Google Meet are small rooms created in meetings. The concept is not new; both Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet have support for this feature. This allows the meeting organizer to move meeting participants to a smaller room.

Breakout Rooms are still part of the meeting. They include several meeting participants and these participants are added/removed by the meeting organizer. You can create multiple breakout rooms, and each room can have its own name.

How to Use Google Meet Breakout Rooms

If you want to use Google Meet’s Breakout Rooms, you must first join the meeting from your computer. This feature is not yet available in the Google Meet mobile app. You can use this feature if you have made a call to a Google Meet meeting. Here are the steps that you have to do:

  1. Join or create a Google Meet meeting.
  2. Allow participants to join the meeting.
  3. Click button Activities on the bottom right.
  4. select Breakout rooms from the Activities list.
  5. Choose how many rooms that you want to create (You can create up to 100 rooms).
  6. Name every room.
  7. Drag and drop participants to the room where you want to move them.
  8. Click Create.
  9. Participants must join the room they were added to.
  10. Hosts can join any breakout room they want.
  11. A participant can leave the breakout room and return to the main meeting whenever they want.

How to Add Participants/move Participants

Following are the steps on how to move meeting participants between rooms after creating them;

  1. Click Edit rooms.
  2. Add/move participants between rooms.
  3. Click Save.

Once the meeting is over, you (Host) can click End Breakout Rooms. This will close all rooms and all participants will be moved to the main meeting.

How to Create Breakout Rooms Before the Meeting Starts

You can also create a breakout room in Google Meet before the meeting starts, in other words you have scheduled the meeting. Here are the steps that you have to do:

  1. Add event to Google Calendar.
  2. Add Google Meet meeting link go to event or click
    Add Google Meet videos

  3. Click the Gear button next to the meeting link.
  4. Open tab Breakout Rooms.
  5. Choose the number of rooms what you want to do.
  6. Click Save.

Notes: You cannot add participants to the breakout room until the meeting starts.

Google Meet does have a breakout room feature but it is not one of the features available to all users, aka the feature is not free. According to Google, you need to subscribe to one of the following Google plans:

  • Essentials
  • Business Standard
  • Business Plus
  • Enterprise Essentials
  • Enterprise Standard
  • Enterprise Plus
  • Education Plus
  • Teaching and Learning Upgrade
  • Business Workspace
  • Nonprofits
  • Workspace Individual Subscriber

Breakout Rooms is a great tool but not part of the free Google Meet offering. You must subscribe to one of Google’s workplace or education plans. In some cases, the plan may require that you have an available domain to set up a Google account and that will add to the cost.
