How to Use Windows 11's Voice Access Features

Here’s a guide on how to use Windows 11’s Voice Access feature. Voice Access is a new Windows 11 feature that allows anyone (including people with disabilities) to use their voice to control their Windows laptop or PC.

This feature is available as of build 22518. You can use your voice to access and switch apps, surf the web, type email, and much more. The best thing is that this feature recognizes speech using on-device speech and even works without internet connection.

This Windows 11 Voice Access feature is also equipped with a simple tutorial for practicing voice commands. Once you read the interactive guide, you will be able to control the sound of your entire PC.

Its voice commands are easy to pronounce and you can do almost anything. However, for now the Voice Access feature only supports US English.

If you are Windows Insider user then you can find Voice Access feature in Settings Accessibility. If it is available, then you can find it right above the features Voice Typing in the Speech.

What is Voice Access in Windows 11?

Voice Access is a new accessibility feature in Windows 11 that makes it easy for you to manage your PC with just your voice. Voice Access was created with people with disabilities in mind. Voice Access uses on-device speech recognition to recognize speech without an active internet connection.

Voice Access can be used, among other things, to navigate the user interface, open programs, surf the web, type email, enter text and much more.

With Windows 11 Insider preview build 22518 on the Dev channel, Microsoft has started bringing Voice Access. The feature will be present in next year’s feature update for the stable version of the OS. Voice Access now supports only English (United States).

How to Set Up Voice Access in Windows 11

1. Open Settings app use Windows 11 keyboard shortcuts Win+i and switch to section Accessibility from the left sidebar.

2. Under settings Interactionclick Speech to open the settings screen Voice Access.

3. Now, enable the Voice Access switch to use your voice to type and control your Windows 11 PC. You can also choose to enable the checkbox Start voice access after you sign in to your PC so that Windows automatically starts listening to voice commands when you turn on your PC.

4. As previously mentioned, Voice Access is currently limited to English (United States), and you should download language pack offline to start.

From the top bar, click the button Download to download and install language packs for voice access. This speech model will process the voice data on your device locally. In particular, Microsoft says that voice data is not shared to the cloud.

How to Use Windows 11’s Voice Access Features

1. After you download Voice access speech model, Windows 11 will automatically display an interactive Voice access guide to help you get to know the feature. From the guide, you must first choose microphone which you will use.

2. After selecting the microphone, you have to say click Start guide to open the Voice access interactive wizard. You can say click skip guide to skip the demo.

3. Now, follow the on-screen instructions to try out how to open menus and options, control the mouse pointer, and dictate and edit text. The process mostly involves saying click and you can see the full list of supported commands in the next section.

For example, you can use the command show numbers to display a number above all clickable dots in the active window. Then, you can say click with the number corresponding to the action you want to perform.
